As the school year draws to a close, students may feel both excited about summer and anxious about final exams. Final exams are such an ingrained aspect of the academic process that we rarely stop to reflect upon their value. Taking a moment to do so can serve as a reminder – for ourselves and our students – of why we continue to require learners to review an entire semester’s worth of content and then prove their understanding of it on a time-limited – and no doubt stressful – final exam that will be worth a significant portion of their final grade.
Final exams offer many benefits for learning that we should not lose sight of:
- The very process of preparing for final exams helps students hone their study skills and ability to focus, which are crucial for academic and job success.
- Reviewing material learned earlier in the semester supports recall and retention as well as encourages students to draw connections between different concepts and topics covered in the course.
- For educators, final exams provide a standardized and more objective method for measuring learning outcomes and assessing student performance.
In the case of learning differences, advocate for your student and encourage them to advocate for themselves. Open book exams and memory aids, quiet spaces, and extra time can allow many students to better demonstrate their mastery of the material.
